Kuntz Ranch UpdateSpring is a season of contradictions-the last of the winter snowfalls are shrinking into sunless valleys and protected tree rows, the newest sprigs of grass are popping through the brown remains of last fall, and the crocuses, robins, and northbound geese are almost shouting their welcome. It is a season for gearing up and clearing the cobwebs from our sleepy minds, our brains and bodies shifting into overdrive, trying to make mental lists of everything that needs to be done. continue reading from front page of newsletter here . . .
Fences need fixing, equipment needs tuning and repairing, summer pastures need to be secured, horses need to be sorted, wormed, branded, put into bands, and then trailered to the various pasture locations, fields need to be seeded, rocks need to be picked, and preparations must be made for both the upcoming hay season and the annual meeting. The list is mind-boggling and seemingly endless. Our skeleton work crew will deviate from feeding horses to being "tractor jockeys" and spending a good portion of time putting in crops and making hay. The winter of 05-06 was relatively mild by comparison and thus the horses are coming into the spring season in great shape. Approximately 3000 round bales and some necessary grain subsidies provided the ranch horses with supplemental feed during those long, dark days of winter.
And we have tremendously high hopes for the foaling season as well, which has just gotten under way. The first foal of the year made its way into the cold, crisp February air with a full and furry winter coat to his credit. The Easter holiday has blessed us with two more foals, shown here, and many more will follow in the upcoming months. Is it any wonder that this is our favorite time of year on the ranch??
