8th Annual Meeting Scheduled for
Saturday, June 17, 2006.

We are quickly zeroing in on the NHC's 8th annual meeting, scheduled for Saturday, June 17, 2006. Don't delay … make your plans NOW to attend!!

There truly is no better time to visit the Kuntz Ranch and meet the Nokotas in person. There will be visitors from across the country and coast to coast and myriad opportunities to learn about our organization, our goals, our hopes, and our dreams. The grass will be green, the skies blue, and the foals will be numerous, varied, and BEAUTIFUL!!

Daily activities are planned beginning on Thursday, June 15th with the Horses on the Prairie Camp's overnight visit to Linton and Seeman Park. If you desire to learn more about this innovative camp, please don't hesitate to attend and enjoy the group's evening campfire and listen in on the interesting speakers. You will not forget this educational and fun experience.

Friday (June 16th) will bring a day of pasture tours and welcoming new visitors as they arrive. Tentative plans are for a street dance and social in downtown Linton … small town dances are a thing of the past and a memorable occurrence.

Saturday (June 17th) will be packed with all things Nokota! The meeting itself will begin around 10 AM at the St. Michael's Church Hall-a cozy building with kitchen and bathroom facilities which will accommodate our group, rain or shine! Lunch is being catered from our local Lion's Den Deli with the remainder of the meeting to follow. Our infamous cream can dinner will be served early in the evening and weather permitting, a campfire will be held under the moonlight at the Kuntz Ranch.

And finally, on Sunday (June 18th, Father's Day) there will be a celebration of dads and Nokota horses. The day will begin at 9 AM with a community breakfast/brunch served until 1 PM in Linton's Seeman Park, just east of town. The wonderfully hot and fresh pancake, egg, and sausage meal will be followed by Art in the Park- a collection of varied craftspeople displaying their work (or goods) for your enjoyment and purchase, if you so desire. The Nokota Horse Conservancy will be hosting a table of currently available merchandise, including decals, bumper stickers, postcards, notecards, hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. You'll find the perfect item for dad, or anyone else on your gift-giving list. Be sure to join us for all the fun.

For motel reservations in Linton, please contact either Don's Motel at (701) 254-5457 or Willow's Motel at (701) 254-4555. In Wishek (33 miles east), please call the Wishek Inn at (701) 452-4223.

This meeting weekend for the Nokota Horse Conservancy is a VERY important one, and not only because it happens just once per year. It brings together people from all walks of life with a common interest in the Nokota horses and the Conservancy's efforts to preserve this unique breed. Please support our efforts by attending!!

PLEASE RSVP for any of the events or activities that you might want to attend. This information is vital for planning purposes.

SPECIAL THANKS TO NOKOTA HORSE SUPPORTERS

As 2006 moves along, the NHC and its board members and the Kuntz family want to thank you, the supporters of the Nokota horses. We are acutely aware of the vital role our supporters play in the survival and promotion of the breed. Many of you put in massive efforts to attend events, staff booths, update web pages, and haul horses. Others have sponsored horses or sent generous random donations. Still others sent regular donations or bought merchandise. Each of you is valuable to the Nokota horse and our efforts to preserve them. Your contributions all matter in the big picture. We appreciate each and every individual and the personal effort made to benefit the Nokota horses.

The Conservancy also wants to recognize the men behind the hay stacks, those pillars who provide for the physical needs of the Nokota horses, wrenching everything they can out of each and every day, the equipment and their very bodies. These individuals put countless hours into these horses. Making and moving hay, breaking and fixing equipment, moving and feeding horses, and all of the other ranch chores for over 600 horses are performed by just a few men with calloused hands and big, albeit tired, hearts. Thank you - Frank, Leo, Seth, and Matt.

Kuntz Ranch Update

Spring is a season of contradictions-the last of the winter snowfalls are shrinking into sunless valleys and protected tree rows, the newest sprigs of grass are popping through the brown remains of last fall, and the crocuses, robins, and northbound geese are almost shouting their welcome. It is a season for gearing up and clearing the cobwebs from our sleepy minds, our brains and bodies shifting into overdrive, trying to make mental lists of everything that needs to be done.

Leo Kuntz, Jr., 1921-2006

Leo Kuntz Jr.-husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Leo was born on December 4, 1921 and died on March 19, 2006.

Dad loved and enjoyed horses his whole life and he lived life to it's fullest. The Kuntz ranch was a place where the rest of the family always gathered - whether cousins who came to stay for the week (or the summer) or holidays when as many of the twelve kids as possible traveled there. The family grew exponentially over the years, and all were welcomed and loved fiercely.
